On February 5th, 2019 the City of Winnipeg’s Public Works committee voted in favour of eliminating the $12.65 ‘door-to-door’ service fee applied to wheelchair users accessing a local taxicab. Over the past few months we have heard countless complaints of this discriminatory policy being used abusively and fraudulently.
While the issue must ultimately face a vote before the entire city council, it looks like the surcharge will soon become a thing of the past.
Our thanks to the Winnipeg Parking Authority for responding to the concerns of the community and continuing to work in good faith towards a more equitable and accessible local vehicle for hire industry.
