The program moves through a 3-stage process of self awareness, community awareness and community participation where each stage demonstrates understanding of self and environment in a way that promotes ownership of the process in moving from isolation to independence. Some steps include:
- Initially the role of the Consultant is to build a trusting relationship with the participant, in order to gain insight and create dialogue around program parameters and consumer expectations. From this the consumer initiates a plan that recognizes timelines and activities that will lead to the goal of graduation from the program.
- The Leisure Education Consultant meets with participants one-on-one for a few hours every two weeks to discuss resources, activities and goals. They elaborate on plans to attain full participation in leisure activities.
- Participants will utilize other program supports such as “Leisure Buddies,” complimentary passes, a peer-support network of consumers, Information and Referral and many other resources that facilitate engagement in new recreational activities in the community.
